TACUFIN, THE A COMPANY for Upcycled Foods and Ingredients Innovations, is an internationally operating organisation under the TAC umbrella, dedicated to creating upcycled food and ingredient innovations using African know-how, combined with modern processing techniques or raw materials of African origin.

The Problem

The foods we love are often associated with ugly realities. This is particularly true of cocoa, coffee and cashews-based products. What do these commodities have in common? They are commodities, mostly grown in Africa, whose well-known ingredients are very popular with consumers. However, these commodities are only partially exploited in the modern manufacturing industry, despite the high potential of the raw materials as a whole or their by-products (known as waste) for people and nature. This problem can be formulated as follows:

For Nature

About 70% of the cocoa, coffee and cashew fruit is considered waste, despite their nutritional and sensory properties.

For Manufacturers

Commodity prices are rising sharply. For example, the cost of cocoa beans is rising to the point where chocolate could be more expensive than caviar.

For the Consumers

Consumers are increasingly demanding healthy food because they are faced with challenges of a busy working life, heart disease and obesity, to name but a few.

For the Farmers

Despite the high demand for raw materials, farmers remain poor. For example, the income of a cocoa farming family in 2020/2021 was USD 4,937.

TACUFIN's Solution

TACUFIN works on Transforming  the food production in a sustainable way, using innovative upcycling processes to create new, healthy natural resources and consumer products, removed from all forms of waste and exploitation of our brave farmers. And all of this is taking place within the framework of the AFOODS® Group. This is a context where everything is of value and there is no waste. 

This makes it possible to process vegetable waste in such a way that it is suitable for human consumption. In this way, we are able to deproblematise the food that we enjoy eating so much in a sustainable way. At the same time, all parts of the raw materials that are inedible for food safety reasons are converted into non-food products.

How it Works

AFOODS® Group is an umbrella brand with a beverage and convenience food portfolio of subsidiary brands including cobu copu, pulpaco and more. The AFOODS® Group product portfolio includes a wide range of healthy and tasty foods and beverages. Using traditional African knowledge combined with modern processing technologies, we process our selected agricultural raw materials of African origin so that all parts are processed into food. For Nature

Reduction of cocoa and coffee processing waste by an average of 70% and a reduction of tonnes of CO2 thanks to partial production in the countries of distribution, depending on the raw material.

For Manufacturers

Provision of new ingredients to replace expensive traditional ingredients or to add new flavors and nutritional value to innovations. Save up to 50% on raw material purchases.

For the Consumers

Offer of 10 times healthier and more affordable products than traditional cocoa, coffee or cashew products.

Creation of new sources of income for farmers and an increase in their income by up to 50%, depending on the commodity.
